Film still from CITY LIGHTS: Charlie Chaplin and a flower girl.

Impaired Sight: Between silent film and sound film, ironic and social critique, a blind flower girl and a mutable millionaire, CITY LIGHTS was made at a time of technical upheaval and is strongly indebted to the miming talents of Chaplin despite all the desire to experiment with sound. He “saves” not just the millionaire with a penchant for alcohol, but also the sight of a young woman. A film full of inexhaustible fantasy, social critique and slapstick.
